According to a recent discovery, 7 of the biggest olive oil brands in the USA cut their olive with canola or sunflower oil and are of very low quality. As if tainting other healthy products for profit wasn’t enough, now we can’t trust olive oil
According to an investigation, 70% of the olive oil sold in the USA is fake and cut with cheaper and inferior oils such as sunflower or canola oil. This discovery follows an Italian police investigation from 2008 that closed 85 olive oil producers that mixed their olive oil with chlorophyll, sunflower and canola oil.
After mixing the oil with lesser oils, producers flavor and aromatize it in order to make it indistinguishable from organic olive oil. A few years ago, Australian customers were concerned about the quality of some olive oil brands, which resulted in tests conducted by the government that had shocking results.
After the tests, not a single olive oil brand got the 2012 certificate of approval. The University of California did their own research and found out that more than 70% of the 124 imported olive oil brands didn’t pass the test for authenticity.

If you’re unsure of the authenticity of your olive oil, you can test it yourself at home. Just put the bottle in a fridge or outside in cold weather for 30 minutes and see if it turns solid. If it does, the oil is pure, but if it doesn’t, it has additives in the form of monounsaturated fat that keep it liquid. Also, check the bottle for the “Australian Extra Virgin Certified” and “California Olive Oil Council Certified Extra Virgin” government certified labels of approval.
